Hello! Welcome to The Box Office Report for the weekend of April 12-14, 2024.

1. Civil War

Weekend gross: $25.7M
Total domestic gross: $25.7M
Last weekend: New release
Percent drop: NA

Civil War may prove to be a divisive movie (I’m falling further into the “I didn’t like it” camp), but the film gave Alex Garland his biggest opening weekend as a director. Civil War’s $25.7 million domestic debut easily topped the $11.1 million that Annihilation opened with in 2018.

Will Civil War continue to be a winner at the box office next weekend? Despite its strong opening weekend, the film got a B- from CinemaScore, which usually means poor word-of-mouth around a movie. If Civil War can overcome that score and not see a huge drop over the next few weekends, it should become Garland’s biggest domestic hit.

2. Godzilla x Kong: The New Empire

Weekend gross: $15.5M
Total domestic gross: $157.9M
Last weekend: 1st
Percent drop: 50

Godzilla x Kong: The New Empire may have fallen to Civil War this weekend, but the latest installment in the MonsterVerse is closing in on Kong: Skull Island ($168.1 million) for the No. 2 spot on the franchise’s domestic ranking.

Does Godzilla x Kong have a shot at joining 2014’s Godzilla as the MonsterVerse’s only films to crack $200 million in North America?
