Hello! Welcome to The Box Office Report for the weekend of Jan. 19-21, 2024.

Reader survey

Before we jump into this edition of The Box Office Report, can I ask for a favor? Can you take a few minutes to fill out the first ever Popculturology Reader Survey? After more than a year of writing this newsletter (and with the migration putting everything on the table), I’d love to get your feedback and thoughts. The survey is anonymous unless you want to add your name to say hi.

1. Mean Girls

Weekend gross: $11.7M
Total domestic gross: $50M
Last weekend: 1st
Percent drop: 59

I’m going to copy and paste last week’s edition of The Box Office Report since the top five is exactly the same. Despite falling 59 percent, Mean Girls is still the top movie in North America.

The musical remake added $11.7 million to its domestic total. Through two weekends, the new Mean Girls is outpacing the original, $50 million to $42.1 million.

2. The Beekeeper

Weekend gross: $8.5M
Total domestic gross: $31.1M
Last weekend: 2nd
Percent drop: 49

The Beekeeper is creeping up director David Ayer’s all-time box office chart. It’s now moved past his earlier releases and is just $10 million away from passing End of Watch’s $41 million domestic haul. Can it pull that off? Probably. I think Suicide Squad’s $325.1 million is safe, though.
