‘Argylle’ flops, but still spies an opening weekend box office win

The good news? ‘Argylle’ is the No. 1 film. The bad news? It cost $200 million to make.

Hello! Welcome to The Box Office Report for the weekend of Feb. 2-4, 2024.

1. Argylle

Weekend gross: $18M
Total domestic gross: $18M
Last weekend: New release
Percent drop: NA

The box office finally got a major shakeup this weekend, with two new releases bumping returning contenders like The Beekeeper, Wonka and Mean Girls out of the top two spots.

Argylle debuted at No. 1, giving director Matthew Vaughn another box office champion. It was his fourth movie to open at No. 1, following Kick-Ass ($19.8 million), X-Men: First Class ($55.1 million) and Kingsman: The Golden Circle ($39 million).

The spy flick somehow cost $200 million to make, so an $18 million opening weekend, even if it’s in the top spot, isn’t great.

2. The Chosen: Season 4 (Episodes 1-3)

Weekend gross: $6M
Total domestic gross: $7.5M
Last weekend: New release
Percent drop: NA

Here’s a wild one — this isn’t actually a movie. It’s the first three episodes of a season of a show called The Chosen. This is apparently the beginning of a release schedule that’ll see Angel Studios release three batches of episodes of The Chosen in theaters before the new season heads to streaming.

I’m guessing we’ll see future batches of The Chosen in the top five over the next few weekends.
